Home-working 'could cut congestion'

Thu, 04 May 2006

Flexible working habits including working from home could cut the congestion on Britain's roads by up to ten per cent, recent research claims.

According to drivers' group the RAC Foundation, if every employee worked for one day at home every week, then a reduction of ten per cent in traffic could be seen in just five years, the equivalent of eliminating the school run.

At present, an estimated 11 per cent of the workforce are home-workers, with many more practicing flexible working hours, staggering commuting times.

However, RAC Foundation executive director Edmund King said that the benefits of more flexible working practices could be given to everyone.

"The potential for millions of other workers to work smarter – either spending some or all of the working week at home, in another location or simply by varying their working hours to allow staggered journey times – is considerable," Mr King said.

"If enough companies adopt it then rush hours would ease, road congestion reduce and overcrowding on public transport lessen, cutting travel time for everyone and making it a less stressful part of the day."

Fewer cars on the road during rush hour is also likely to reduce the chances of collisions occurring, making it less likely that an expensive claim on your car insurance will be necessary.
