Insurance penalties set to sharpen

Thu, 01 Sep 2005

Police are set to crack down on uninsured drivers in a bid to show motorists that driving without car insurance will not be tolerated.

Officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary are to have new powers to seize and destroy any vehicle being driven without insurance or the correct licence.

Since the beginning of August, police in the region have been using cutting-edge technology to read the registration number of every passing vehicle, check it against records and seize the vehicle if it is found to be uninsured and unlicensed.

Motorists must then pay £105 for recovery, along with an added £12 per day storage charge – or face the destruction of their vehicle after 14 days if they cannot provide evidence of car insurance or the correct licence.

Chief inspector Nigel Brown, head of road policing, told the Welwyn & Hatfield Times: "We will not take any excuses or make any exceptions.

"If you don't obey the law we'll make sure that you, not the law-abiding motorist, pay the price."

The uninsured or unlicensed motorist could also be taken to court, Mr Brown stated.
