Keep your car safe this winter
Mon, 12 Dec 2005
With car-thefts on the increase, drivers are being warned to take some precautionary measures against having their vehicles broken into this winter.
According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, tips for keeping cars safe from thieves are mainly common sense.
Even if making a quick stop, removing your keys from the ignition and locking all doors is essential, says the Bureau. Always parking in a well-lit area is also a good idea.
Anti-theft devices such as steering, brake or wheel locks can also help in avoiding car insurance claims, since thieves may not bother braking into a car if they can see the vehicle is protected.
Immobilising devices can also be used to stop a crook hotwiring a car, the Bureau said. This includes 'smart keys', which have specially coded computer chips or radio frequencies that won't allow the car to be started without them.
A tracking device can also help police to locate a car should thieves manage to steal it.
