London set for C-Charge increase

Thu, 18 May 2006

Motorists in London could be set to see their expenses rise further, with another increase to the congestion charge likely.

The congestion charge will rise to £10 a day by 2008, Ken Livingstone announced in a televised debate last week.

Speaking to ITV London, the mayor of London pledged that he would include the 25 per cent hike in his next election pledge, in a bid to further reduce congestion in the capital.

However, the proposal has already been attacked by critics, who claim it is a money making exercise which will do little to ease traffic problems.

The AA Motoring Trust has described the rise as "unwelcome" and claim that any further reduction in congestion will be minimal.

Mr Livingstone's political opponents have also criticised the rise, describing it as a revenue-raising exercise. However, the mayor maintains that any additional funds will be re-invested in public transport.

Regardless of the effect on congestion, the £2 rise will be a financial blow to motorists, with many likely to seek out cheap car insurance in a bid to keep motoring costs down.
