Low emission zone proposals under consultation
Wed, 01 Feb 2006
Car insurance may not be all drivers have to worry about if proposals for a low emission zone in London go ahead.
The Greater London Authority has revealed that public consultation on the scheme is now underway and it appears likely that London mayor Ken Livingstone's proposed zone will be implemented in the capital by 2008.
Drivers who regularly travel within the M25 will be forced to upgrade their vehicles to more fuel efficient ones, or to have their current vehicles fitted with emissions-reducing technology.
Those who do not will face the prospect of penalty fines for failing to meet emissions standards.
Mr Livingstone said that he was hopeful of the scheme playing a major contribution in his bid to make London one of the world's most environmentally-friendly capitals.
If successful, it is thought that the zoning system will be applied to other UK cities including Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield.
