Mechanics 'more expensive than barristers'

Fri, 17 Feb 2006

A new study has found that the fees charged by car mechanics are more than those charged by barristers or doctors.

Research by What Car? magazine found that mechanics regularly bill their customers more than £100 per hour in labour costs alone; well above fees charged by junior barristers which can start at around £30 an hour.

What Car? editor Steve Fowler described the high cost of car repairs in the UK as reprehensible.

"Quite simply, dealership labour rates for repairs are just too high," he said.

"The What Car? research clearly highlights that there are huge price differences across the country. There are so many options available to consumers; they need to consider franchised, non-franchised dealers, local or not so local," he added.

The magazine did argue, however, that the increasing use of advanced technologies employed by car manufacturers meant that repair jobs were more complex and time consuming to carry out than in the past, highlighting the need for car insurance in the event of any mechanical problems.
