Motorists distracted by attractive passer-bys

Mon, 03 Apr 2006

British motorists are keeping their eyes on good-looking passers-by, but not the road, according to a survey.

Auto Trader magazine found that attractive people were the biggest distraction for drivers, with 36 per cent saying the accursed affliction drove them away from paying proper attention.

"At least the motorists surveyed are being honest. It can take a superhuman effort to keep your eyes on the road, especially now spring is on the way and everyone's going to be ditching their winter clothes," commented Auto Trader's web editor Adrian Higgins.

He offered important safety advice for motorists: "We recommend our readers save their admiring glances for when they're not behind the wheel."

The Department of Transport remarked that the "Highway Code makes it clear that drivers should drive with due care and attention at all times".

The survey also found that motorists' second biggest distraction is the mobile phone, with a fifth claiming that the technological miracle annoys them to the point of losing track of their driving. A smaller 11 per cent said that tailgating often put them off the road.

Being distracted while driving is a major cause of road accidents, demonstrating the importance of car insurance.
