Needy Fund helps homeless woman with car insurance

Thu, 22 Dec 2005

A 25-year-old homeless woman in Cape Cod has been helped out by the regional newspaper's Needy Fund to get car insurance for her vehicle.

Attempting to care for her sick child, the unnamed woman needed to get her son to a hospital in Boston for treatment but could not afford to buy car insurance.

Applying in desperation to the Needy Fund for help, a cheque was sent by the charity to the woman's car insurance company in order to get her back on the road.

The fund currently helps around 2,300 individuals and families a year to meet their basic financial needs. This includes utility bills and rising housing costs in the Cape Cod area.

Beneficiaries of the fund receive payments through a voucher system, rather than through cash payments. Applicants to the scheme are accepted throughout the year and the charity reported as many as 50 calls a day over the summer.
