New ideas for greener motoring

Tue, 20 Jun 2006

Academics and think-tanks are being encouraged to come up with new ideas on how to promote low carbon vehicles and cut greenhouse emissions from cars.

The Low Carbon Road Transport Challenge invited various non-governmental organisations to put forward their views on how the problem of excessive emissions from cars could be combated, with speed limit reductions, and taxing cars depending on how much CO2 they emit, both suggested.

Researchers from the UK Energy Research Centre argue that reducing the speed limit to 60 mph would be the most effective way to reduce carbon emissions, as less fuel would be used.

However, Dr Ben Lane from the Open University argues that taxing less fuel efficient cars more would be a better system in the long term, as people would be encouraged to convert to fuel efficient vehicles such as cars that use hybrid technology.

Some car insurance providers are currently considering giving cheaper car insurance deals to those driving hybrid cars, which run on a combination of petrol and electricity, in an effort to make driving a more environmentally friendly activity.
