Northern crime hotspots necessitate car insurance
Fri, 02 Jun 2006
Nottingham, Manchester and Sheffield have been named as the UK's car crime hotspots, according to police figures released under the Freedom of Information Act, underlining how crucial it is for motorists to take out adequate car insurance cover.
A report compiled by Reform, an independent think tank, found that there were some 40 reported car crimes per 1,000 head of population in Nottingham, compared with just nine in Ashford, Kent.
While car insurance premiums are not entirely based on the level of local crime, high levels of car crime in the vicinity will undoubtedly raise car insurance premiums.
The Guardian quoted a spokesman for Endsleigh Insurance, saying: "Premiums are reviewed on a regular basis, so if you live in one of those areas it is going to have an effect but there are other things that are taken into account, for example what kind of locks you have.
"For car insurance, details such as where you park at night - on the street or in a garage - and the make and model will play a part."
Some 400,089 thefts of or from cars were recorded across the 57 cities surveyed, accounting for 54 per cent of all offences, even though these cities contain just 36 per cent of the population.
As a result, motorists are encouraged to take out comprehensive car insurance to cover all eventualities, particularly if they live near a car crime hotspot.
