'Obsessed' residents put pressure on councillors

Tue, 17 Jan 2006

Angry residents in Rubery, Worcestershire, have been pressuring councillors to take action to deal with recurring problems concerning the area's roads.

Speeding traffic, combined with flooding problems and poor quality road services have led to numerous complaints by local residents over what they claim are the council's empty promises to resolve the issues.

But at a meeting to discuss some of the issues raised, one resident said he was becoming "obsessed with roads" because the problems had become so prevalent, reports ruberyvillage.co.uk.

A speed survey conducted by the councillors last year revealed that 85 per cent of cars were driving at an average of 43mph through the village, with total disregard for the 30mph speed limit.

Not only were drivers risking having points added to their driving licences resulting in increased car insurance costs, but the speeding vehicles were putting local residents in danger and causing a nuisance on the roads.

Although concillors said that they would answer residents' appeals in due course, a highways partnership technician explained that more speed surveys needed to be carried out in the area and that a proposal for the implementation of speed bumps was not viable.
