Parents 'set bad example'
Mon, 06 Feb 2006
Parents could be stirring up trouble for the future by setting a bad example for their children, it has been claimed.
According to a recent study, mums and dads regularly lose their temper behind the wheel, swearing at other motorists when their children are passengers in the car.
Psychologists believe that road rage can be transmitted in this way to children, who are likely to imitate adults particularly their parents - and copy their behaviour when they grow up.
Instead of learning safe driving lessons from their parents therefore, children are more likely to become irritated behind the wheel themselves; a factor which could increase the number of car accidents and impact car insurance premiums.
DIAmond Advanced Motorist General Manager Eddie Barnaville said: "As parents we must be aware of the damage we are doing to potential young drivers of the future, and make sure we pass on the safer and finer points of driving."
Mr Barnaville added that the problem could be solved if people were more fully equipped with the skills and attitudes needed to drive safely and without incident on today's roads.
