Sharing car space can lower insurance

Mon, 12 Jun 2006

With National Lift Share Day fast approaching this week, one insurance company has revealed that filling the space in your car while driving can help to reduce car insurance premiums.

Wednesday 14th June will see National Lift Share Day and new research by Halifax Car Insurance has shown there will be around ten million cars on Britain's rush-hour roads with no passengers.

This figure equates to around 38 million empty car seats on British roads with the survey revealing that the average annual cost for a solo driver travelling to work in the UK is £1017.

It seems young drivers are the most likely to car share with 25-34 year olds leading the way in their attitude to car sharing while the younger age group of 18-24 years actually put car sharing into practice the most.

A number of insurers will give reduced premiums if drivers make an effort to carry more passengers – usually you are able to carry them in return for a mileage payment as long as there is no element of profit.
