Speed cameras flashes cost £150m

Fri, 07 Apr 2006

Speed cameras are costing the country's drivers £150 million, according to new research.

With the introduction of speed cameras, 2.2 million drivers are caught speeding each year, an increase of 328 per cent over the last ten years, and they are paying fines worth £144 million a year.

Motorists are facing a 'double whammy' as being caught speeding can lead to increases in car insurance premiums, estimated by a leading insurer to cost £36 million.

Although authorities claim that speed cameras are put in place to improve road safety, many drivers see them as being dangerous.

Fifty-four per cent of drivers say speed cameras make people drive erratically as they focus too much on the speedometer and looking out for cameras than on any potential hazards on the roads.

Speed cameras are also blamed for the rise of 'yo-yo driving', as drivers speed up after cameras and brake suddenly when the spot them.

Although speeding can hit motorists' wallets, by choosing a good value car insurance policy it could be possible to lower the cost of driving.
