Tax costs motorists dear

Tue, 07 Feb 2006

Almost a third of motoring costs are spent on tax, it has been revealed.

According to servicing and maintenance provider Motoreasy, British drivers hand over a total of £27 in tax out of every £100 spent on motoring.

Taxes on car insurance, servicing, breakdown cover, road fund licences and VAT soon add up, claim experts at Motoreasy, although fuel was revealed as the chief expense.

Around 72 per cent of the price of fuel currently wings its way to the taxman, amounting to around 20 per cent of the average driver's costs.

"Motoring really does cost a lot more than people realise," said Motoreasy representative David Gerrans, highlighting how a cheap car insurance policy can help to keep costs down.

"The average motorist forks out almost £90 per week to keep their car on the road, £24.30 of which is tax."

However, he added: "But with the continual rise in the price of public transport what feasible alternative do they have?"

Motoreasy's findings were based on an analysis of 12 three-year old popular selling cars with an average weekly motoring cost of £89.44.
