UK to have first motorway share lane
Tue, 21 Mar 2006
The UK is to get its first ever car share lane that will give priority to people sharing a car.
The £2.5 million lane will be on the M606 and M62 between Bradford and Leeds in West Yorkshire and will open in 2007.
It is hoped it will improve journey times by eight minutes during peak times.
Transport Secretary Alistair Darling said yesterday: "Car sharing can help make journeys quicker and more reliable on this very busy stretch of motorway."
In 2008 a similar car share lane will also be introduced on the M1 between junctions 7 and 10.
Mr Darling added: "Innovative and imaginative measures like car sharing can help make better use of the road space available.
"These measures alone will not solve the underlying problem of congestion. That is why we are looking at the possible benefits that road pricing might bring in tackling congestion on our roads."
Sharing a car is just one way of cutting down the cost of motoring along with opting for a cheap car insurance deal.
