UK to oppose EU driving laws

Fri, 19 May 2006

The Department for Transport has decided to block new European Union (EU) plans to bring down the legal alcohol limit for drivers, and installing speed limiters on cars, the Times has reported.

EU transport ministers had planned to introduce the landmark Europe-wide legislation at some point in the near future, legislation that includes, among other things, a law making the official drink-drive limit the same for all European countries.

However, the British contingent have chosen to intervene, withdrawing its support for the law changes, much to the anger of other European states who have traditionally looked to the UK to take the lead in road safety campaigns.

The UK currently has the worst record for reducing deaths on the roads, with only a six per cent drop in car accident related deaths in the last five years, compared with a European average of 15 per cent.

The UK's lack of support for the new road safety measures has therefore baffled road safety campaigners.

Should they be introduced, the new laws are expected to cut the number of accidents on Britain's roads, not only reducing the number of deaths, but also bringing down car insurance costs as well.
