Car Insurance
Uninsured driver crackdown launched
Tue, 08 Nov 2005
Transport secretary Alistair Darling has revealed tough new enforcements to deal with uninsured drivers, affective from today (November 8th).
Police forces across the UK now have powers to use automatic number plate recognition cameras to bust motorists driving without car insurance.
The cameras are linked to a database system containing details of vehicles registered in the UK that are suspected to be uninsured.
Mr Darling said the new system meant that there was now "no place to hide" for drivers without car insurance, since the database will make it much easier for the police to tell if a passing car is illegally uninsured.
"On top of these powers we are creating a new offence of keeping a vehicle without insurance," Mr Darling added.
"This will be enforced through a new database of insurance details which means that uninsured drivers don't even need to be on the road to be caught."
Mr Darling also pointed out that law-abiding drivers pay an additional £30 a year in extra insurance costs to cover those who flout the law.
