Wedding guests 'ignore drink-drive laws'
Wed, 10 May 2006
Wedding guests who have a good time at the reception are ignoring drink-driving laws, putting themselves and others at risk, new research suggests.
According to research carried out by a leading insurance firm, one in three wedding guests admit getting behind the wheel when over the limit, while one in ten concede that this has caused them to drive dangerously breaking the speed limits or drifting out of a lane on a motorway.
The survey, which questioned 2,300 adults, also found that the party spirit at wedding receptions meant that some 16 per cent of drivers managed to put away more than ten units of alcohol before attempting to drive home.
The findings make worrying reading for car safety campaigners, with concerns that drink-driving's taboo status in British society may be beginning to slip.
Not only does drinking before driving endanger other road users, it may also mean an expensive car insurance quote the next time you renew your insurance, with a drink-driving conviction to consider.
Campaigners advise either abstaining from alcohol at the reception, or organising a taxi to take over the driving duties when the celebrations are over.
