Worst cars revealed

Tue, 06 Dec 2005

New data has revealed the cars most likely to prove a financial headache in car insurance costs and repair bills for British motorists.

Independent automotive warranty firm, Warranty Direct, has named and shamed the used car brands that are reported to break down on a regular basis.

Based on a study sample, 30 per cent of cars will breakdown over a 12 year period, leaving owners to pay out a repair bill that averages £310.66.

With around 7.2 million cars between three and five years old currently on the roads, that totals a massive £677 million in unforeseen repair bills annually.

"These are real cars, real claims and genuine bills," said Duncan McClure Fisher from Warranty Direct.

"They are the statistics that really count when you weigh up what used car to buy. It is hard to recommend a vehicle to someone when seventy percent of owners have had to have remedial work done to it over the past 12 months."

Brands worst off in terms of break down statistics included the Renault Espace, the Jeep Cherokee and Saab's 9-5 executive model.
