Convicted Driver

Agreement over driver bans reached

Mon, 13 Feb 2006

An Anglo/Irish agreement over convicted driver bans has been reached by British and Irish Transport Ministers.

Following a meeting hosted by Ireland's Department for Regional Development, new rules will see any ban picked up in Eire automatically applied in the UK, with the same principals affecting drivers in Ireland.

Due to come into force next year, the deal will see disqualified drivers and those carrying convicted driver insurance facing the same rules in both countries.

Road safety minister Dr Stephen Ladyman said: "If a UK driver is disqualified while driving in Ireland, then he or she should not escape the consequences when they return home."

The deal is thought to be the first of its kind between the two countries.

Currently, drivers convicted of offences such as dangerous driving, speeding, hit-and-run or drunk driving while in Ireland face no similar bans on their return to the UK
