Alarming rise in uninsured drivers

Fri, 12 Aug 2005

The number of motorists without insurance is rising at an alarming rate, according to latest figures.

There has been a 40 per cent increase in uninsured drivers in London, over the past two years, and despite a recent clampdown on them by both the government and the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Raising alarm at these figures, Paul Watters of the AA Motoring Trust called for tougher penalties for motorists caught driving without insurance.

"Uninsured driving is especially prevalent in London where there is a high population and it's easy to hide. Also, people tend not to shop their neighbours because they don't know them," he told the London Evening Standard.

"The message must be sent loud and clear that people who drive without being insured will be caught and faced with a hard-hitting penalty," Mr Pope added.

Uninsured drivers are nine times more likely to be involved in an accident than other motorists.

With the healthy level of competition in the UK's insurance market almost anyone can get cover.

Even convicted driver insurance is obtainable if you shop around.
