Convicted Driver
Banned UK driver sentenced on Isle of Man
Tue, 03 Jan 2006
A UK motorist convicted of drink driving in the UK has been sentenced on the Isle of Man for breaking the injunction.
This is the first case where bans imposed locally in the UK have applied on the Isle of Man. The accused, Adrian Breed, was therefore the first person disqualified by a UK court to be prosecuted for driving illegally on the island.
Mr Breed, 31, was disqualified in the UK for drink driving. In court on the Isle of Man on last Thursday he admitted to drink driving while disqualified and without car insurance. In his defense Mr Breed added that he did not think the ban applied on the island, reports Isle of Man Today.
The Isle of Man's recent agreement with the UK over prosecution of convicted drivers comes at the end of a long-running campaign to prevent UK banned motorists from driving on the island.
The loophole meant that convicted drivers and motorbike riders were effectively escaping responsibility and punishment for causing serious accidents.
Those convicted by law for drink driving or speeding offenses can benefit from taking out a convicted driver car insurance policy.
