Convicted Driver

Catseye cameras could cut car insurance

Wed, 12 Oct 2005

Motorists who break the speed limit may be caught by miniature speed cameras hidden inside Cateyes in a new attempt to cut road traffic accidents.

Hoping to clamp down on drivers who consistently break the law by speeding, putting themselves and others at risk, traffic police have initiated the hidden camera scheme.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, head of the Association of Chief Police (Acpo), Richard Brunstrom, claimed that Britain's roads had become "a very lawless environment" overrun with "men who think they have a human right to drive as fast as they want".

Road accident casualties in 2004 totaled a figure of 290,607, with 3,221 people killed on Britain's roads and insurance premiums pushed up for those uninvolved in the crashes.

Car insurance premiums also rise significantly for drivers who accumulated points on their licences from speeding offences. Latest attempts to slow speeding motorists therefore could lower insurance rates for those who keep within the law.

A holding cell at the Dartford Tunnel in Kent was also suggested by Mr Brunstrom for use when detaining motorists caught speeding at the Thames crossing.
