Convicted Driver
Eleven year old banned from driving
Thu, 29 Sep 2005
An 11-year-old boy was banned from driving yesterday, despite being six years too young to own a license.
Police pulled over the youth last August after noticing the vehicle, a BMW, was driving in darkness with its headlights switched off.
Following as the boy lost control of the car and mounted a pavement, police also noted that the driver was hardly tall enough to see over the steering wheel.
A 12 month ban was given to the boy by magistrates at the Basingstoke youth court in Hants, as well as a four month supervision order.
Nine penalty points will also be applied to his license as soon as he is old enough to qualify for one.
The boy admitted to the offences of driving without a licence or valid car insurance near his home in Andover, as well as not showing due care and attention on the road.
Reported as having behavioural problems and learning disabilities, the boy claimed to have swapped the BMW for his mini-motorbike with a man he met in Winchester.
He also said that he was not aware a license was required in order to drive a car.
