Convicted Driver

Kinnock rapped for speeding

Fri, 28 Apr 2006

Neil Kinnock, the former leader of the Labour party and now a member of the House of Lords, may be looking for some convicted driver insurance the next time he takes to his car, after being caught speeding and banned from driving.

The Labour peer will lose his licence for six months after he was caught by speed cameras travelling at 57 mph in a temporary 40 mph zone, and later at 63 mph in a 50 mph zone, both on the M4 motorway.

He was also fined £800 by magistrates, and ordered to pay court costs.

Reacting to the loss of his licence, which already had nine points on it, Lord Kinnock said that it would be "massively inconvenient."

However, he accepted that the sentence was fair, adding: "Speed is a killer, and I have campaigned all my life against speeding. If you break the speed limit you expect to take the consequences."

Lord Kinnock joins thousands of other motorists who are convicted of speeding on Britain's roads each year.

Having several convictions for speeding can result in your insurance premiums going up the next time you come to renew your policy, as the price of convicted driver insurance needs to account for the greater risk of a claim being made.
