Speed camera system overhauled
Fri, 16 Dec 2005
Alterations to the instillation of speed cameras are to be made, with the machines no longer to be funded by speeding fines.
Motorists have long expressed a grievance over the proliferation of cameras on the UK's roads over recent years, claiming that funds raised from speeding fines are not put back into road safety measures.
Transport secretary Alistair Darling now plans to create a £110 million central fund for road safety purposes, which will be available to local councils in order to carry out speed restriction changes and other traffic calming measures.
"I want cameras to be linked more closely to wider road safety," Mr Darling said.
"In some places cameras will still be the solution, and can be funded through this money. In other places there will be alternative solutions which this funding can cover," he added.
The initiative will put an end to the increasing number of cameras in the UK, with the new scheme hoped to be in place by 2007/08.
Drivers who have incurred fines from speed cameras are likely to benefit from taking out specialist convicted driver insurance.
