F1 team in new young driver move

Tue, 19 Jul 2005

Lucky Strike BAR Honda has announced the first results from its Young Driver Programme which aims to find the F1 stars of tomorrow.

Since the end of the 2004 season the team has been running the programme from which it hopes to cherry-pick the best of tomorrow's bright young things.

Three drivers have been picked from the nine hopefuls, all from various junior formulae, to join BAR at this week's test in Jerez.

"The Young Driver initiative which we are putting into place at BAR is the result of a considerable period of careful planning and research," explained Race Engineer Jock Clear.

"The investment from the team has been substantial and so far we are pleased with the results seen and the commitment of all the drivers who have participated.

However, he pointed out that the initiative "is not about finding an immediate understudy" for the current BAR team drivers.

"The Young Driver Programme is about nurturing talent and giving the drivers the support needed to make it to the very top of motorsport," he added.

The three chosen drivers will each get two half-day sessions in the BAR car at Jerez so they can experience a fully functional F1 race car.
