Over 1m drivers wrongly insured for work
Tue, 12 Jul 2005
More than one million motorists in Britain are potentially breaking the law by failing to insure their car correctly when using it for work.
The 430 owner-managers questioned by online insurer motorinsurance.com may be benefiting from cheap car insurance, but almost a third admitted to not being aware of whether they are appropriately covered for commercial driving.
"If people are using their cars for a business trip, they must be insured under a Class 1 use – a business – policy," explained Mark Bower-Dyke, managing director of motorinsurance.co.uk.
He explained that companies do not have to pay in the event of an accident if motorists have only domestic and social use covered through their policy.
The research also revealed that more than a quarter (26 per cent) of those who used their car for business purposes drove more than 500 miles per week.
