"Dangerous" driver jailed for six months

Fri, 22 Jul 2005

A man from East Anglia who became involved in a police chase after driving a van along the wrong side of a dual carriageway has been sentenced to six months in prison.

Richard Byerley, 36, of Felixstowe, was branded a "dangerous" and "reckless" driver by Judge Peter Thompson when he delivered his sentence at Ipswich Crown Court.

A shocked motorist alerted police to the fact that Mr Byerley was driving his van on the wrong side of the A12 in the early hours of January 12 this year.

Repeated attempts by police to stop Mr Byerley led to a chase, which ended when a stinging device that deflated the driver's car tyres finally managed to make him come to a halt.

He admitted dangerous driving, driving without insurance and while disqualified, and failing to provide a specimen of blood, and received a three-year driving ban and an order to pay costs worth £250 along with his jail term.

With previous convictions for drink driving and driving while disqualified, Mr Byerley was already a convicted driver, but he could still have invested in car insurance to protect himself and others.
