Anxious drivers to be offered extra lessons
Tue, 29 Nov 2005
Motorists in Glasgow are going to be the first in the UK to be offered additional driving lessons, after one third of UK drivers expressed anxiety about using the motorway, it has been reported.
This figure increases for women, according to a recent study, which claimed that one in five women are anxious about using major road systems, even when fully covered by women's car insurance.
Glasgow council told the Evening Times that it believed it was vital to raise driver confidence in order to make the roads safer, after the number of accidents occurring on the city's motorway network increased from 30 to 40 between July and September.
Land services director Robert Booth said: "We want to offer people a course which will instill them with confidence.
"Drivers get their licence and can immediately drive on motorways, despite having no great exposure to driving at motorway speeds."
The one hour course being offered by the council is likely to cost about £25 and is designed to teach drivers the skills they need to tackle the motorway more confidently.
