Men 'don't trust women drivers'
Wed, 14 Dec 2005
A psychologist has claimed that men don't trust women motorists because they do not have "adequate driving skills".
Dr Sher Alwi claimed at a seminar on driving and vehicle safety that "men feel superior behind the wheel" and that women tended to drive more slowly and cautiously.
The attitude is due to the traditional role men play as both the protector and the head of the family, Dr Alwi told the Straits Times: "It is a natural instinct. They feel it is their duty to protect their family and feel uncomfortable if their wives take over the wheel."
A change in stance will only take place if women demonstrate a greater interest in learning to maintain a car, he added.
Learning to change a tire or fix an engine fault would mean that women would no longer have to reply on their partners to do these things for them.
Crime analyst Kamal Affendi Hashim added that some cases of road rage cases against women could be put down to impatience felt by male drivers who liked to speed while women drove more vigilantly.
Specialist women's car insurance can keep costs down for female motorists who agree with the sentiment that they are more safety conscious than their male counterparts on the road.
