Mums launch women-only taxi service

Tue, 14 Feb 2006

Two mothers from Warrington are aiming to cash in on a gap in the market by launching a women-only taxi service.

Andrea Winders and Tina Dutton unveiled the Pink Ladies last June but the candyfloss-coloured cabs are due to be available nationwide within the next 18 months.

Under the scheme, women give £1 to join the Pink Ladies 'club', paying fares that rival those charged by black cabs. The women-only policy puts women's welfare at the heart of the Pink Ladies operation, its creators insist.

"There was the case of this young girl on a night out who had been murdered by someone posing as a taxi driver," Ms Dutton told the Telegraph.

"When we did our market research, girls told us they didn't want to be the last one to be dropped off at night. And we've both got teenage daughters, so it's something that's always bothered us."

Ms Winders added that the problem of unlicensed mini-cabs seemed to be particularly prevalent in London and that the firm currently has around 100 parties interested in taking on a Pink Ladies franchise.

Women drivers can also benefit from taking out a women's car insurance policy.
