New seatbelt designed for women drivers
Mon, 06 Feb 2006
A new seatbelt designed specifically for women drivers has been developed by engineering firm MIRA.
The belt, which aims to make driving more comfortable for the nine in ten women who currently find seatbelts painful while driving, could help women's car insurance claims jeopardised by those not wearing one.
MIRA engineers have produced a belt which could make chest pain for female drivers a thing of the past. The S-clip seatbelt is worn vertically rather than diagonally across the chest, relieving pressure on the torso.
Tests have confirmed that the new shape of the belt does not reduce its effectiveness in a crash situation.
Although the S-clip is yet to hit the market, its creators are currently in talks with car and seatbelt manufacturers who are concerned that women are failing to buckle up because they don't feel comfortable in the driving seat.
