Registration proves taxing for drivers
The current car registration system is still proving taxing for many motorists, according to a recent survey.
Research conducted by Post Office Car Insurance found that more than a quarter (27 per cent) of the drivers interviewed believed the new numbers being introduced today would be 05 when they will actually be 55.
According to the seven-symbol registration system introduced in September 2001, March registrations are indicated by an initial 0, whilst a September registration is shown by a 5, with the following digit indicating the year.
Almost half the motorists questioned by Post Office Car Insurance had no idea at all of what the new numbers would be, whilst another quarter thought the digits referred to where the driver lived.
Post Office car insurance head Claire Oldstein said: "It's been four years since the current numberplate format was introduced and still only a quarter of people actually understand what the letters and numbers on registration plates mean.
"With so many of us confused, those driving round in new cars this week might not turn as many heads as they'd like."
More than eight out of ten women were confused by the new format but finding the registration system taxing to is no excuse for failing to invest in the best women's car insurance policy.
