RMI welcomes simplification of re-plating rules

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) has welcomed a decision by the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) to simplify the rules on selling re-plated vehicles.
Dealers must currently obtain proof of identity for the buyer of a re-plated vehicle, and keep a record for three years for possible inspection by enforcement authorities.
However, the changes will mean that, when a vehicle comes into a dealers stock, the number plate can simply be switched to one showing the selling dealer's name. The DVLA hopes the regulations will be changes by September.
The exemption does not apply when a motor dealer sells a number plate as separate item, when they must still obtain and record purchaser details. The changes will have no effect on policies for men or women's car insurance.
Alistair Manson, head of the RMIs National Franchised Dealers Association, commented: "We are delighted by the DVLAs decision. This was a burden for dealers, an irritation for consumers, and unnecessary when customer details have already been captured as part of the vehicle sales transaction."
