Women don't recognise dashboard signs

Tue, 07 Mar 2006

A new survey has found that millions of women drivers do not recognise dashboard signs.

It was found that 47 per cent of women couldn't identify basic warning lights.

Only a third of women drivers know the warning light showing high coolant temperature, and 58 per cent could not identify the rear fog light symbol.

As well as not being able to identify when the car is in need of oil or overheating, not knowing certain symbols can put other drivers at risk.

Two fifths of women drivers said they did not know the warning sign for the main beam headlight, possibly meaning they are dazzling oncoming drivers without realising it.

"It's worrying that so many female motorists are in the dark over some of the most common dashboard symbols," said Lloyd East of the AA, which was behind the survey.

Before men look too smug, their performance at spotting symbols was not very much better.

Women can, however, take comfort from the fact that women's car insurance policies can make their motoring cheaper.
