Women drivers 'fleeced' by mechanics
Wed, 07 Dec 2005
Most women drivers believe that they are ripped-off by mechanics because of their gender, it has been claimed.
Research by a leading insurer into motorists' attitudes towards mechanics has revealed that over half of UK drivers feel they have been fleeced by a mechanic, while more than a third of young drivers said they felt discriminated against because of their age when taking a vehicle in for repairs.
This comes as the company issued a warning over the dangers of using a 'cowboy' mechanic.
British motorists spend millions collectively employing a second mechanic to fix dodgy work done previously, the company claimed, with over half of all drivers saying they have fallen victim to sub-standard work.
Drivers reported that basic faults had been missed by so-called cowboy mechanics and that parts had been fitted unnecessarily.
Women drivers can also benefit from taking out a specially tailored womens' car insurance policy, which may cut the financial costs of owning a car.
