Women in India object to tinted glass ban

Wed, 18 Jan 2006

Proposals for a ban on cars with tinted windows by Indian traffic police in Bangalore have been criticised by women drivers apprehensive that the ban will compromise their security.

With women drivers increasingly driving alone late at night as they commute home from work, the privacy that tinted glass offers is valued – like especially designed women's car insurance - as a means of protection.

Novell Software employee Vijayalakshmi Sharma, told the Times of India: "I drive back late on some lonely roads. I could be the target of eve-teasers as it will be obvious I am alone.

"The safety of women should be kept in mind while making such rules."

Other women claim that the ban should be imposed only on taxis, with the common belief being that many women drivers can be subject to unwanted attention at traffic lights or junctions where they are required to stop.

More thought and research needs to go into whether the city needs to ban tinted glass on all vehicles, many believe.
