Women on top in drag racing

Fri, 28 Apr 2006

While women's car insurance remains cheaper because women are seen as safer drivers, there's one group of women who might not fit that generalisation – the women champion drag-racers.

Most motor racing divisions struggle to attract women to the race track, leaving the sport almost entirely male, but in drag racing there are women drivers and riders who are taking on the men and beating them in both drag racing cars and drag bikes.

In the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) in the US, female drivers have dominated the sport, with Melanie Troxel currently leading this year's Top Fuel drag racing championship, while Angelle Sampey heads the pack in the Pro Stock motorcycle division.

Troxel has opened up a massive 156-point lead over second placed David Grubnic, while Sampey, who has dominated Pro Stock motorcycles, winning the division three times, is currently 63 points ahead of her nearest rival Andrew Hines.

Asked why it was that women do so well in drag racing, Angelle Sampey told Associated Press: "I think probably the biggest reason would be just the simple fact that drag racing is more of a mental sport than a physical sport compared to every other sport out there."
