Women set new world record

Wed, 23 Nov 2005

Female motor racers attempted to set a new world record last weekend when they competed in Formula Woman Novice Races at Pembrey in South Wales.

A total of 62 women took part in the event; more than have ever previously competed in a motor sports event.

Winners of each of the four races received automatic entry for the 8-round 2006 Formula Woman Novice Race Series, which will feature events throughout the UK.

"It was felt a concentrated race day was the perfect way of sorting the women from the girls and giving those attending an experience to remember," said Formula Woman founder, Graeme Glew.

"We are confident we created a new world record in the process and have submitted our claim to the Guinness Book of Records."

Driving at the event was reported to be hard and fast, with competitors enjoying every minute of the event, though male race goers were said to have been slightly bemused by the number of blonds competing on the circuit.

"Nobody attending this historic Pembrey meeting could doubt the future for females in UK motorsport," Mr Glew added.

"I've known for years that women were just as keen to race as the men. Now others are witnessing the fact for themselves."

The success of the event will no doubt help to highlight the achievements of women within the motoring world, as well as endorsing the benefits of women's car insurance.
