Young Driver
Brake: Children fear traffic
Thu, 10 Nov 2005
Children in the UK do not have to worry about young driver car insurance, but they are scared of being run over by a car, a new report reveals.
Results of a survey published by the charity, Brake, showed that around 70 per cent of children do not want to walk or cycle along roads because they are frightened of fast traffic.
Over 10,000 young people were questioned by the charity, with the release of the results coinciding with the government's National Road Safety week this week (November 7th-13th). The charity is also urging the government to reduce speeds limits in community areas to 20 miles per hour.
Brake chief executive, Mary Williams, said: "Drivers give all sorts of excuses for speeding and tell us it is hard to stay under limits all the time."
Ms Williams went on to say that it was "unacceptable" that children live in fear of traffic, made worse by the fact that their fears are legitimate.
"A child is hurt or killed on UK roads on foot or bicycle every 31 minutes," she said.
