CCC runs Young Driver Education programme
Fri, 10 Feb 2006
Cornwall County Council's (CCC) Road Safety Unit will be re-running their Young Driver Education Programme during February.
The highly successful scheme is targeted at young drivers between the ages of 17 and 21, taking the inexperienced motorists through a series of workshops to inform and educate them on road safety issues.
Although young drivers in this age group represent fewer than ten per cent of licence holders and have lower than average mileage, they are involved in around 20 per cent of all road collisions involving injuries, highlighting the need for young driver car insurance.
Road Safety Project co-ordinator, Carol Wright, said: "Most 17-year-olds have a desire to drive and many receive a provisional licence and a course of driving lessons on their birthday. Unfortunately nobody tells them how vulnerable they are or how many young people have collisions, some of which are fatal.
"The Young Driver Education programme has been running for eight years and has proved to be a successful way of putting these important messages across to new young drivers."
The programme is run by the Road Safety Unit in conjunction with agencies such as the Police and Fire Brigade. The workshops are based around activities including problem solving exercises, practical demonstrations and discussions, focusing on knowledge attitude and risk perception.
