China to build MG in UK
Thu, 04 Aug 2005
The new Chinese owner of MG Rover has announced that production will resume at Longbridge, with the design and building of a new range of cars.
The Nanjing Automobile Group will be collaborating with designers from the GB Sports Car Company, and is hoping that the new partnership will bring in an annual capacity of 80,000.
Speaking on behalf of GB Sports Cars, Fraser Welford-Winton said: “I am delighted I will be at the heart of the development and the implementation of a business plan that will produce long-term skilled jobs at Longbridge and create a centre of excellence for sports car activities for which the UK is world renowned.”
Nanjing paid around £60 million for MG Rover last month, but it was not certain what the consequences would be for Longbridge.
The spokesman for GB Sports Car has said that the MG TF roadster and the MG ZT sporty saloon version of the Rover 75 would be the initial focus, which although are sure to be very classy vehicles will not be in many people’s price range.
Classic sports cars also fall into a high insurance bracket especially when the package is in conjunction with young driver insurance, so drivers may have to wait a few years before they can indulge in one of these sure-to-be classics.
