Competition sends message to young drivers

Mon, 03 Oct 2005

Preparations are under way for the final stage of a competition aimed at sending a warning message to young drivers.

Held on October 16th at Silverstone, the Catherine Kenyon young driver of the year competition will include 40 young drivers from around the UK.

Designed to endorse sensible driving, the competition aims to prevent young drivers from becoming another fatal accident statistic as well as teaching them the importance of proper vehicle practice such as car maintenance and motor insurance.

Figures show that around 15 per cent of all road deaths in the UK involve 17 to 21-year-olds and that one in four drivers killed on our roads every year are under 25.

In the competition final at Silverstone, the young drivers will carry out a series of exercises, including skid control, manoeuvring, and theory, as well as an overall driving section.

The competition is sponsored by financial services provider, Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS), which expressed its delight at being able to endorse road safety amongst young drivers.

Russ Brady, head of communications at CIS, said: "CIS insures over 1 million vehicles and is committed to improving road safety for everyone. This initiative provides an ideal opportunity to target and educate a significant number of those most at risk - the young and inexperienced."
