Young Driver
Drop in alcohol limit proposed
Mon, 10 Jul 2006
Young drivers should be limited to drinking no more than half a pint of beer before driving, a newly released report says.
According to the report by the Institute of Alcohol Studies, the legal alcohol limit should be reduced for younger drivers because their lack of driving experience makes them more likely to have an accident on the road, maintaining the higher prices associated with young driver car insurance premiums.
Young drivers are known to be responsible for more than their fair share of accidents resulting in fatalities or serious injuries on Britain's roads.
This is despite the fact that drivers in their late teens and early twenties are known to have quicker reactions than older drivers, with experience appearing more important to safety.
Currently, the legal alcohol limit for driving is set at 80mg per 100ml of blood the report authors say that this should be reduced to 50mg for older adults and just 20mg for the under-21s the equivalent of around half a pint.
