'Lay off young drivers' says survey

Mon, 19 Jun 2006

The higher price of young driver car insurance may reinforce the stereotypical view that all young drivers are dangerous and anti-social boy racers, but now it seems that few people actually agree that this criticism is fair, a recent survey suggests.

According to the survey, which polled drivers of all ages from across the UK, the majority of motorists believed that the bad reputation held by young drivers was the fault of a small minority of bad drivers giving the majority of good young drivers a bad name.

Perhaps more surprisingly, the majority of those questioned said they disagreed with the view that law-breaking young drivers should be forced to re-sit their driving test as a matter of course.

Indeed, two-thirds believed that young drivers are on the whole safe drivers.

However, this is unlikely to bring down the cost of young driver car insurance, as official statistics still show that young drivers are far more likely to be involved in a car accident and make a claim on their insurance than are older drivers.

Ultimately, road safety campaigners agree, the problem is one of experience rather than one of actual driving ability, with young drivers simply being unfamiliar with various driving situations and conditions, making them more likely to crash.
