Learning to drive costs £1,162

Wed, 05 Apr 2006

Getting a driving licence costs on average £1,162, according to new research from a leading insurer.

It was found that the average learner takes 44 lessons to pass their driving test.

With the average cost of a lesson being £22 an hour and the price of the theory and practical tests taken into account young drivers could be paying over £1,000 to get on the road, before investing in a car and insurance.

It was also calculated that the driving school industry is worth over £1 billion a year.

With the high cost of learning to drive many people are rushing to pass their test, but this could well be a false economy.

Taking the test before being ready means a young driver is more likely to fail and have to pay to take it again.

The research also showed that those who pass first time are 20 per cent more likely to have accidents than those who pass the second time.

With the high cost of learning to drive a good way to lower the cost of driving is to opt for a specialised young driver insurance policy.
