Police seek to keep young drivers safe

Tue, 16 Aug 2005

Police in Aberdeen have sought to warn young motorists of the dangers involved in driving after a tragic incident involving a teenage driver.

Speaking after a crash which saw a 19-year old killed at the wheel and his two passengers seriously injured, Chief Inspector Mark McLaren said it was important that the tragedy be seen as a warning.

Expressing his sympathies to the families involved Chief Inspector McLaren, Grampian Police head of road policing, explained to the Herald that young drivers were a vulnerable sector.

"We identified years ago that young drivers, either through inexperience or immaturity, were vulnerable," he said.

Excessive speed and a lack of experience were among the key potential pitfalls, with the police keen to raise youngsters' awareness of driving safely.

The tragedy is also an indication of the need for good young driver car insurance – both in terms of the need to find the right coverage and the potential dangers facing young motorists.
