Young Driver

Silver foxes cause highway menace

Fri, 03 Feb 2006

Grey haired speedsters are causing more of a problem on New Zealand's Kapiti coast roads than boy racers, following a number of offences by over 45s.

Middle-aged drivers have been caught speeding and not wearing a seatbelt over the last month whilst driving in and around the North Island area of Otaki, it has been reported.

Around 60 per cent of drivers caught speeding over the past four weeks have been between the ages of 45 and 55, with this age group accounting for 80 per cent of seatbelt infringements.

Although they may wish that they could take advantage of young driver car insurance policies, they should set an example to their youngers and reassess their speed, a local policeman advised.

"If baby boomers slowed down and wore seatbelts we would have fewer injury crashes in this area," Sergeant Noel Bigwood told the Dominion Post.

"A higher number of young drivers tend to crash, but the older generation sets the example and young people will follow it."

Sergeant Bogwood added that the 64 tickets issued last month was "too many" and encouraged middle-aged drivers in the area to slow down.
